News Discussion #6

On CNN's technology website, there is an article titled "A peek inside homes of the future." I think this is an interesting little article, however I don't see what it has to do with technology.

The article describes and shows plans of what some interior designers plan to do in the future for homes, due to cities becoming more heavily populated.

This story highlights visual pictures of what homes of the future will look like, points out trends that are emerging in these designs (including use of plants to clean the air), and the concept of integrating different rooms into one space.

Although this article deals with futuristic ideas, I don't see how it necessarily relates to technology. In one part of the article it discusses a radical concept of a "rotor house," which has just one neutral room and a revolving section of either bedroom, bathroom, or kitchen. So, I guess this idea would include technology somehow but the article doesnt go into detail of how it works.

News Discussion 5

In the technology section of "The New York Times" there was an article on Ask.com revamping their search engine. It talks about how Ask.com has attempted re-working their site multiple times because they remain so far behind Google and a few other search engines on the web so they keep trying in hopes to be equal with the other companies.

This is an excerpt from the article;

"In its latest iteration, Ask.com will deliver results not only from the Web, but also from so-called "structured" sources of data in certain categories like entertainment, health and jobs. The results are intended to deliver faster answers to certain queries...For instance, a search for 'Miley Cyrus' will include TV listings for the series 'Hannah Montana' in which she stars."

It goes to include that the new Ask.com will include indexes to many Q&A sites from around the Web as well. The new Ask.com will be faster and more relveant, claims the article.

I think it is good that Ask.com is trying to improve, and this article is beneficial because the public will know about the new additions they're trying, but it's hard to get people to change from what their used to. And, especially since "google" is still number 1 and everyone is so accustomed to google, it's going to be hard for Ask.com to replace it in the number 1 search engine spot. I just don't see people straying from google, I feel like it will always be one step ahead no matter what type of alteration other search engines try to improve upon.

Late News Discussion (from Sept. 17)

I will be posting this news discussion ASAP. Due to the power outage (I was out of power for 5 days, I got it back Friday Sept. 20) which is why I haven't posted yet.

Mashup Assignment

http://www.mibazaar.com/top100celebrities/

I found this mashup site, which contains the Top 100 Forbes celebrities. You can click on each celebrity and are taken to their state of residence on the map and presented with a youtube video tribute to them. It's like a map quest/you tube site. Personally, I don't see a point in this website except for mere entertainment. It seems rather silly and not exactly necessary. I don't know what good it does. It definetly represents a mashup well because it contains so many different web application (ie. youtube, mapquest/google map system). So, it's a good example of a mashup.

News Discussion #2

"Virtual September 11 memorial brings back memories, emotions"
CNN. com

This article was published on September 11, 2008, the seven year anniversary of 9/11. The article discusses new technological wonders that allow people all around the world to witness the sights of ground zero and pay their respect to victims just by searching the internet.

"Second Life," a virtual world that exists over the internet, created a series of September 11 memorial events to be experienced by people over the web. Events that took place on this website included speeches, victim name readings, memorial dedications and tribute performances.

I think this technology is a really remarkable things, especially for people who lost loved ones in the September 11 attacks. It acts as a personal, visual coping experience that may not be possible when living so far away from New York City. It can allow people with common experiences to connect and share their stories and feelings and express emotions  about this historic day in history. It allows people to feel closer and comforted.

This article is very valuable, because I never knew of this technology and I think it is something that could very valuable.

Never forget September 11. This site will keep the rememberance alive.

News Discussion #1

The New York Times - September 4, 2008

"Google At Age 10" - I think this news articles isn't exactly news worthy. I guess its ok because it provides statistics that may be interesting for research, but otherwise, it's not that important. All it says is that Google is great, and that's already evident to everyone we don't need to read about it in a news article.

I am really not sure how this article suggests the development's effect on others. I guess it is effective because google is so large and takes over the way we do things in our life through using the internet, etc.

There isn't necessarily a viewpoint being expressed in this article, just statistics and the facts are hard to argue with or think otherwise of, so I would have to agree with what this news article is displaying.

It is evident that google is one of the largest search engines on the web, shown through its evergrowing stature and additions and development over the past ten years. Today, everyone knows it and everyone uses it.
